Marilyn Antunes
(Mathematics) attended the
Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics Fall Conference at Deep Run
High School on October 28. The meeting
focused on the interrelationship between mathematics and the arts.
In
December, Antunes traveled to Germany to visit, among other attractions, the
Christkindlmarkts and Weihnachtmarkts (Christmas markets).
LeAnn Binger (Psychology) serves on the Local Human Rights Committee at Southside Training Center and has been asked to facilitate a panel discussion there on Behavioral Treatment Plans. She is also working with the director of Mental Health and Retardation on treatment definitions.
Recently, Binger
was elected to chair the Local Human Rights Committee at Poplar Springs
Hospital.
Brian Daugherity
(Appomattox Leadership Academy) continues
work on the Civil Rights movement in Virginia for his dissertation at William
and Mary. He is also serving as
consultant for two major museum exhibits marking the anniversary of the Brown
v. Board of Education decision, as well as co-producing a documentary film on
the Civil Rights era in Virginia.
Alexandra Duckworth (English) recently
completed a novel-writing workshop with well-known writer David Robbins at
Virginia Commonwealth University.
Pat Harvey (Director of Institutional Research) was elected to the board of the VA Association for
Managers, Analysts, and Planners (VAMAP) as at-large representative for
two-year institutions.
Harvey has also been asked to serve as the Track 3
Chair for the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Association of Institutional Research
(AIR) and will be serving as the Track 3 Assistant Chair for 2004.
(Track 3 covers presentations relating to administration and planning.)
The Southern Association of Institutional Research
(SAIR) has asked Harvey to serve on the panel to select the SAIR Best
Paper award for two-year institutions.
Tom Milton (Biology) attended
the Fall Meeting of the Virginia Association for Biological Education at
Gloucester, VA on October 17 and 18.
There, he learned about giant squids, the Sea Lab, and the effects of
Hurricane Isabel on the VA Institute of Marine Science. He also attended the VA Science Museum’s
Mini-Medical School lectures on “Headaches” (December 3) and “Multiple
Sclerosis” (December 10).
Additionally,
Milton coordinated the campus-wide annual collection of pink Yoplait yogurt
lids. Proceeds from donations of these
lids go to fund research on breast cancer.
Elizabeth Rescher
(English) attended the December 2003 Modern
Languages Association convention in San Diego. This year is her last of three
as a representative in that body’s Delegate Assembly.
Charlotte Rhodes (Physical
Education & Wellness) completed a Stability Ball Home Study
to receive 3 continuing education credits with NDEITA (National Dance Educator
Instructor Trainer Association). This training will be used in Aerobic
Conditioning/Combo. Rhodes also completed IFA (International Fitness
Association) Aerobic and Fitness Instructor Certification.
