LeAnn Binger (Psychology) attended the Fall Convention of the Virginia Psychological Association held on October 17 & 18 in Richmond, VA.

 

Michelle Delano (Art) recently exhibited in the Faculty Show at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she also taught a class in Creative Thinking this semester.

 

Alexandra Duckworth (English) spoke on “Language in the Digital Age” in a Math Monday talk given in the Ernst Lecture Hall on October 28.

 

          She and Elizabeth Rescher (English) took several students to see Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison read from her work at Virginia Commonwealth University on October 2.

 

Rachel Finney (Spanish) attended a Teaching Foreign Languages with Technology conference held at Goucher College in Baltimore, MD.  The conference was sponsored by Houghton Mifflin, the ACTFL (American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages) and IALLT (International Association for Language-Learning Technology).  Conference participants examined and experimented with various language-learning software products and learned how to better manage foreign language Internet assignments and student activities.

 

Roland Havis (Psychology and Sociology) is involved with ongoing research on Jungian Personality Theory and related academic variables.  This semester he is collecting data on Teacher Evaluation, Math Anxiety, Creativity, and Social Exchange.

 

Alenka Hlousek-Radojcic (Biology) attended the 2002 Virginia Biotechnology Summit and Governor’s Conference on Technology Transfer and University Research held October 14-16 in Tyson’s Corners, VA.  Keynote speakers were S. Collins, a physicist-geneticist who is Director of the National Genome Research division of the National Institute of Health, and Kary Mullis, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist.

 

Linda Jefferson (English) and Williabel Davis (English) attended a talk by Toni Morrison given at the University of Richmond on October 3.  Morrison addressed the cultural and moral roles played by fiction-writing today.

 

Jeremy Jordan (Mathematics) and Margo Sommer (Mathematics) are sponsoring BoogieBaBa, a group of those interested in learning dance techniques, which meets in the Student Center on Thursdays at 3:00.  Interested individuals are urged to either attend, or speak with the sponsors.

 

Tom Milton (Biology)  attended a seminar at the University of Richmond  on "The Case for a Non-Native Oyster in the Chesapeake Bay:  Science and Policy" on October 9, 2002.  The seminar was given by Dr. Eugene Burreson, a researcher at VA Institute of Marine Science.

         

Mary Monroe (Biology), Tom Milton (Biology) and Lee Woodruff (Biology) attended the Virginia Association of Biology Education fall meeting in Danville, VA on October 17 and 18.  Milton and Woodruff went with the group for a tour of the Carolina Biological Company in Burlington, NC.  The tour involved discussion of procedures and research and an introduction to the electrophoresis of DNA.

 

Elizabeth Rescher (English) has been invited to join the American Association of Literary Scholars and Critics for 2002.

 

Charlotte Rhodes (Physical Education and Wellness) accompanied two students to the 17th Annual College Conference on Binge Drinking presented by the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in conjunction with the VA College Alcohol Leadership Council on October 17-19 in Chesapeake, VA. One interesting program they feel would be of value for Richard Bland is “Alcohol 101,” an interactive program created to reduce the harm associated with the misuse of alcohol and help college students make responsible decisions about drinking or abstention. We could offer 1 credit for the program.  The students brought back an abundance of other ideas for the campus as well.
