Transfer Agreement

George Mason University

AND

Richard Bland College

of The College of William and Mary

The purpose of this articulation agreement is to assist students at various levels of higher education to achieve their goals in an efficient and timely way.  This purpose may be achieved through the coordination between George Mason University and Richard Bland College of The College of William and Mary of transfer policies, enhanced advising, and acceptance of equivalent courses.  This agreement is in support of the State Policy on Transfer.

1.   Upon application, George Mason University (Mason) will guarantee acceptance of all Richard Bland College graduates with an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree who have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.5.  This guarantee assumes that there are no other factors in a student’s academic or personal record that might prevent acceptance.  For guaranteed acceptance, applications must be received by April 1 for fall term and November 1 for spring term.  Students with grade point averages below 2.5 or who apply after the stated deadlines also will be considered for admission but without the guaranteed acceptance.  Students seeking admission to certain schools or departments will be admitted conditionally and must meet the admission requirement of the School or College for full admission to the major.  For example, some of the Schools or majors with second tier requirements are the School of Management, the School of Nursing, and the Bachelor of Individualized Study.

2.   Mason will evaluate courses/credits awarded by Richard Bland College and earned through AP, CLEP, or other testing programs.

3.   Mason agrees that Richard Bland College graduates who are accepted under the provision of the State Policy on Transfer, excluding reference to the transfer Module, will be designated as junior-level students, but may be required to complete any unfulfilled Mason upper-division general education requirements or specific requirements for a BA/BS degree.  Students transferring from Richard Bland College to specific Mason programs must meet he same prerequisites, GPA, and other admission criteria as for other transfer or native students applying to those programs.

4.   Richard Bland College graduates transferring to Mason can generally expect to graduate in two years, assuming they take normal course loads, have met the specific prerequisites for their majors, and make satisfactory progress.

5.   Students who are not native speakers of English should score at least 230 on the TOEFL examination and have the minimum grade point average of 2.5 in order to be guaranteed admission.

6.   Students transferring from Richard Bland College will be required to complete a minimum of 45 semester hours of upper division coursework to be eligible for the Mason degree.  As defined in the transfer guides, 100/200 level courses may be used to fulfill certain 300/400 level requirements of a degree at Mason.  However, no Richard Bland College courses may be applied toward the requirement for 45 upper-level course credits.  Transfer credit will not be granted for Richard Bland College courses numbered below 100.  Two courses with essentially the same content (as determined by Mason) cannot both be counted toward the same degree.  Transfer of credit does not necessarily imply applicability to specific degree requirements.

7.   Mason will offer accepted applicants from Richard Bland College consideration for available financial aid if they apply for aid by the recommended deadline of February 1st.

8.   The faculty and staff of the two institutions will work together to maintain a course-by-course evaluation of all courses listed in the Richard Bland College Catalogue.  Richard Bland College faculty and advising staff will encourage prospective Mason transfer students to meet the spirit and content of the Mason general education requirements to the greatest extent possible in preparing for transfer.

9.   Richard Bland College agrees to support this articulation agreement by indicating the relationship in appropriate literature and through its web site.

10.  This agreement may be amended, as needed, for specific program articulation without affecting the currency of the master agreement.  All course-by-course transfer guides may be amended as needed.

11.  This transfer Agreement will remain in effect until terminated by either party upon written notice to the other party of an intention to terminate.  Such notice shall be effective only if given 180 days prior to the intended date of termination.  Upon termination, the agreement will remain in effect for two additional years to accommodate students currently pursuing the articulated program at Richard Bland College
