Restricted Programs List

Certain programs constitute a network security risk and may not be installed on Richard Bland College Computers or those connected to the RBC network. For example,  Instant Messaging and file sharing programs can provide a malicious user with a method of transferring a Trojan Horse virus.    This section of the RBC Intranet web site provides a current list of these programs.   FTP and telnet protocols may be used only with specific approval of the IT staff.  Other programs that consume significant resources or affect PC performance may also be prohibited on a case-by-case basis.

This list is continuously growing and changing.

Before installing ANY application on a Richard Bland College Computer, contact Information Technology Services.

KAZAA or any similar file sharing application that is not expressly approved for work related needs
Morpheus AOL Instant Messenger
Napster MSN Instant Messenger Yahoo Instant Messenger
ICQ/IRC instant messenger or chat systems Game Sites and Gaming Software is expressly restricted on state owned computers.
Spinner (all versions)
Aimster Phynd Winamp
Internet Radio (any version)  This includes but is not limited to:  abacast client
Unauthorized network utilities/hacker tools eDonkey
Gator (This application is inundated with adware and spyware)
Weatherbug
Unauthorized, non-business related live internet feeds.
Non work-related video clips.  Be especially mindfull of all copyrighted materials.  This includes, but is not limited to, movie trailors, video jokes, etc.
Third party screen savers must be approved by ITS prior to download and/or installation.  These applications can be very resource intensive and cause PC performance issues.  For example, Web Shots may have some very nice photos, but it has been known to cause significant PC application issues.
