2.4 The institution has a clearly defined, comprehensive, and published mission statement that is specific to the institution and appropriate for higher education. The mission addresses teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service. (Institutional Mission)
JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
NARRATIVE
Richard Bland College has a clear and comprehensive mission statement that addresses teaching and learning. It serves as the basis of strategic planning and decision-making as well as allocation of fiscal and human resources. The statement is available in published documents such as the College Catalog, the Student Handbook, and the Faculty Handbook as well as on our website in various locations. It is both the mirror and the guiding principle of our unique institutional responsibility as the only liberal arts junior college in Virginia. It is reflected in the Goals of the College, and it has served as the guiding force for curriculum changes aimed at strengthening transfer options for students. See Core Requirements 2.7.2 and 2.7.3 for an example of recent curriculum changes that were guided by the mission statement.
The College is a teaching college with significant weight given to teaching excellence in our teacher evaluation system as described in Section VIII, G, 2, e, of the faculty handbook, but with acknowledgement of our responsibilities to work within the broader community. Such a focus is common in higher education among small colleges seeking to create an intimate environment and educational opportunity at the associate degree level.
