Reeling you in to explore women's history @ your library

The accomplishments and contributions of women are celebrated each year during the month of March.  The National Women's History Project originated this event and in 1987 Congress declared March as Women's History Month.   It is to be a month during which schools, communities, libraries and other institutions feature the stories and significant historical contributions of women.  The theme for Women's History Month in 2002 is "Women Sustaining the American Spirit."  For detailed information about  the National Women's History Project and links to Web sites that feature women, go to http://www.nwhp.org.An exciting project on the local level is sponsored by The Virginia Foundation for Women.  For the past three years, The Virginia Foundation for Women and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International have sponsored posters honoring outstanding Virginia women.   For the 2003 poster, students will be encouraged to send in their nominations for the women to be honored.

The library staff at Richard Bland College was very proud to be an integral part of the 2002 Virginia Women in History celebration.  Dr. Virginia Cherry was chairperson for the 2002 poster committee; Joy Galloni worked with the nomination process; Ellen Andes helped with the Web page and Karen O'Daire assisted with numerous mailings.  The Provost of Richard Bland College, Dr. Anne-Marie McCartan, was chairperson for the Richmond reception.  On February 28th a reception honoring the 2002 Virginia Women in History was held at the Bolling Haxall House in Richmond, Virginia.  On March 14th a second reception was held at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.  Below are some pictures from the Richmond reception:
