Author Info

Although he's traveled the world, author Dean King continues to reside in his birthplace of Richmond, Virginia. Many of King's works focus on sea adventure and maritime history.

A cancer survivor and avid hiker, King has written and developed a glossary, A Sea of Words: A Lexicon and Companion for Patrick O'Brian's Seafaring Tales (1995); a collection of maps, Harbors and High Seas: An Atlas and Geographical Guide to the Aubrey-Maturin Novels of Patrick O'Brian (1996); a biography, Patrick O'Brian: A Life Revealed (2000); and a more recent book, Skeletons of the Zahara: A True Story of Survival (2004)

King also helped establish the annual James River Writers Conference held at the Library of Virginia.  In addition, he has contributed to periodicals such as The New York Times, Outside, Esquire, and Travel & Leisure. He also edited 1997's Every Man Will Do His Duty: An Anthology of Firsthand Accounts from the Age of Nelson as well as the Heart of Oak Sea Classics series.
