Food for Thought! National Youth Service Day: Support the Troops @ your library®
Event: Letter-Writing Day to Pay Tribute to U.S. Troops!

Sponsors: Department of Admissions & Student Development Services, Library, Young Democrats, Young Republicans
Date: Friday, April 21 (National Youth Service Day)
Time: 10 am - 2 pm
Location: Library
What’s Happening: Friday, April 21 is National Youth Service Day, and this seemed like the perfect day to devote to community service! The Department of Admissions & Student Development Services, the RBC Library, the RBC Young Democrats, and the RBC Young Republicans will sponsor a letter-writing day in an effort to send thank you notes and letters to troops in the US and overseas!
But What If I Question President Bush's Military Tactics, Including the War in Iraq? The focus of this event is on supporting individual personnel in the U.S. military and is not intended to serve as an overall endorsement of the war in Iraq! We expect there to be a wide array of political beliefs held by those who participate in this event.
How Does This Work? Everyone is welcome to spend time in the library drafting long letters and/or short notes as well as creating decorative thank you cards for soldiers overseas. The Department of Admissions and Student Development Services has graciously offered to fund the food & refreshments! We’ve even designed a label for each card/note which reads:
This note to you was crafted by a student or employee at Richard Bland College of The College of William & Mary in Petersburg, Virginia.
Do I Need to Bring Special Paper? No, we'll provide you with pens, markers, paper, decorative stickers, etc.
Who Actually Mails the Letters? The letters and cards that RBC staff and students create will be sent to a nationally recognized, non-profit organization known as A Million Thanks: http://www.amillionthanks.org . A Million Thanks will then distribute our mail to U.S. Troops! (The Library Staff will bundle and ship the letters.)
Is This the First Time RBC Has Hosted a Letter-Writing Event to Support the Troops? No, in fact, we held a similar event in November 2005. Information and photos from last semester's event are available online.
