Virginia author Emyl Jenkins visited Richard Bland College on Tuesday, March 27. Born in Danville, Jenkins would later receive her Masters’ Degree from the University of Virginia. She now resides in Richmond. Jenkins is an experienced antiques dealer who had written several non-fiction works about antiquing and has discussed the art of appraising on Good Morning America. Jenkins’ passion for mystery writing and antiques came together with the publication of her debut fiction title Stealing with Style which is the first of a series of mystery books set in the world of antiques.
Alexandra Duckworth, RBC Assistant Professor of English, invited the author to speak with students in Wild Minds, the College’s creative writing student organization. Jenkins shared several writing tips with the students and faculty who attended the event. She tells writers to write what they know; it’s what she did and what she advises others to do as well. Jenkins also has a teaching background; she has taught students of all ages, from Head Start programs to college courses.
Faculty and staff attended a reception for the guest author in the newly renovated Center for Student Affairs. The author signed books after the reception, and guests were treated to a cake provided by Library Director Dr. Cherry. Dr. Cherry also purchased a signed copy of Stealing with Style which she has graciously donated to the library. More information about Emyl Jenkins can be found online at: www.emyljenkins.com.
