Facts
& Hints for Using VIVA
-
-
VIVA is the
consortium of the libraries of the 39 state-assisted colleges and universities
within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
-
The majority
of VIVA's funds come from the Virginia General Assembly, plus library budgets
and some outside grants.
-
VIVA has procured,
through negotiated contracts, 165 databases, with FULL TEXT access to millions
of articles and more than 5,000 full text journals and newspapers, as well
as nearly 10,000 full text works of poetry and verse drama and over 700,000
other full text scholarly materials.
-
A database is
a collection of information or data that is stored and organized so that a
computer program can search and retrieve selected bits of that information
or data.
-
Most of the
databases that you will use through VIVA are collections of journal or newspaper
articles that can be searched by subject, etc. and then retrieved so that
ideally you will have the full text of the chosen article. However, many of
the databases available will provide only a citation or abstract and not the
full-text of the article. In that case check to see if we have the print journal or ask library staff to help you find it in another way or initiate an
Interlibrary Loan request.

VIVA Databases Now
The RBC
Gateway to VIVA Resources page contains a list of databases available to
RBC faculty and students through the library's VIVA subscription. Off-campus
access is available for most of these databases. For off-campus access, students
will need a valid RBC email account as well as an Internet browser with cookies
enabled.
