The (now dissolved) Virginia Foundation for Women produced posters to honor Virgnia women in history. Archives of these materials are stored at The Library of Virginia. The Richard Bland College Library was asked to host PDF versions of the Virginia Women in History posters online. As of 2006, The Library of Virginia assumed responsibility for the Virginia Women in History poster project.
Posters have either been divided into sections or are available in their entirety. To view the posters online, choose a link below. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in for your browser. These files require Acrobat Reader.
Statement from The Virginia Foundation for Women:
Women have always been an integral part of Virginia history since their earliest days as Native American wives, mothers and frontier settlers. Yet, for centuries, history was defined by heroic deeds, great warriors and famous statesmen. Women, by definition, did not make it into history books. If women were included, they were considered the supporting cast.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, The Virginia Foundation for Women and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International honors these eight Virginia women for their accomplishments and import contributions. Frequently, they did what they had to, based upon the circumstances with which they were faced. They saw things differently from their contemporaries. They developed new ideas about old problems. They had the courage to speak and act based on strong convictions. They initiated changes in Virginia and America that continue to impact our lives today.
Certificate of Recognition honoring The Virginia Foundation for Women Day signed by Governor Mark Warner.
