Background Information

The Landmark Decision — On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision in the matter of Brown v. Board of Education. By declaring that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal," the Court had deemed segregated classrooms and schools illegal.

Origin of Brown v. Board of Education — The Supreme Court merged five cases from Delaware, Kansas, Virginia, South Carolina and Washington, D.C. Those five cases were combined by the Supreme Court and became Brown v. Board of Education.

The Original Five Cases:

• Belton/Bulah v. Gebhart (Delaware)
• Brown v. Board of Education (Kansas)
• Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County (Virginia)
• Briggs v. Elliot (South Carolina)
• Bolling v. Sharp

Shirley Davidson Eanes was born and raised in Prince Edward County, Virginia where she lived with her mother and three brothers. Attending Prince Edward County Public Schools after the re-opening in 1964, she went on to graduate from Prince Edward County High School in 1972. In 1993, Mrs. Eanes decided to resign her job in order to enroll full-time as a student in Longwood College in Farmville, VA. Following her graduation in 1997 with a B.S. in Education, she was hired by and currently teaches 6th grade English for the same school system that ironically had locked her out more than forty years earlier.
