The Richard Bland College Library is pleased to present a very special "gift of literacy" this year, as we welcome Kristin Terbush Thrower, professor of American History at Richard Bland College. Professor Thrower will be at the Library on November 28, 2001, between 11:00 and 12:30 to autograph her new book, Miller & Rhoads Legendary Santa Claus. The Miller & Rhoads Department Store Santa has a special place in the hearts of Richmonders. Ms. Thrower's research took place at the Valentine Richmond History Center, The Richmond Public Library, and the Richmond Times Dispatch Archives. She also interviewed former employees, customers and Santa Claus devotees. The story of the Miller & Rhoads Santa Claus also includes a history of the Miller & Rhoads department store. You'll find many photographs in this book and some blank pages where you can mount your own photographs of Santa Claus. Ms. Thrower was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and moved to Chesterfield County, Virginia when she was six years old. She has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Arts in History from Virginia Commonwealth University. Kristin's favorite pastime is reading. She is keenly interested in oral history and uses this as a technique in her college classes to try to instill in her students an excitement for learning history and for researching history. Please join us as we celebrate the publication of this wonderful new book that Kristin has authored. And remember that "gifts of literacy" are a wonderful way to "reel students in to the power of information @ your library."
