Bidding Joy Galloni a Fond Farewell

Joy Galloni, April 2004

Moving On to an Exciting New Career as Library Director

Joy's last day at RBC will be Friday, January 7, 2005. Soon after, she will serve as the Director of the Jamestown Public Library in Jamestown, North Carolina.

Jamestown, North Carolina, is very close to High Point and Greensboro. Guilford Technical Community College is in the town of Jamestown.

You can visit Jamestown online. Click on the education button to see a picture of Joy's new library.

Joy Galloni . . . This Is Your Life!

Travels — Born in North Carolina, Joy and her husband Joe have lived in a wide variety of places including Germany, Massachusetts, Kansas, and Indiana. Motorcycle enthusiasts, they went on a motorcycle tour of California, Arizona and Nevada this past summer!

Mom, teacher, librarian — Joy has spent the better part of her adulthood serving as an Army wife and mother which often entailed moving the family and making each new location home.  Before becoming a librarian, Joy taught students from pre-school to 8th grade in public and private schools.   Locally, she has taught at Ettrick Elementary and Walton Schools. Joy began her RBC Library career on April 1, 1997. As the RBC Cataloger and Interlibrary Loan Librarian, her major responsibilities included cataloging the print and audiovisual collection as well as ordering resources through Interlibrary Loan. Living in Virginia for 18 years has given Joy the opportunity to see several of her elementary students become adults and attend RBC!!!!

The college years — Joy has the following postsecondary degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science/Education from Appalachian State University
  • Masters of Education/Library Science from Longwood University

Family tiesJoe, Joy's husband of thirty-three years, retired from the Army after 20 years as an ADP Warrant Officer; currently he is in software development for a contractor at Ft. Lee. His job often forces his him to travel quite often.

Older son Brent is an RBC and VCU graduate in Information Systems & Business and is currently working for Dynamics Research Corporation.  His girlfriend Sheri Randolph is a graduate of Richard Bland and the Southside Regional Nursing program.  She is an RN at Southside Regional Hospital.

Younger son Anthony is an RBC and Radford University graduate.  He is currently in flight school at Ft. Rucker, Alabama as a new Warrant Officer; he will complete training on a 58D Kiowa helicopter in February.  His wife of a year is Heather, a Radford University graduate who is currently teaching at Wallace Community College in Alabama.

Busy bee — A breast cancer survivor herself, Joy has worked tirelessly to fight cancer as an advocate of breast cancer education, public policy and research. Joy has worked extensively with the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.

Back to the future — Joe & Joy lived in the same neighborhood in high school where they were friends. Their parents were also friends and always attended the Friday night football games together; Joe played football and Joy was a majorette. Joe and Joy graduated high school together and began dating before they left for college in different parts of the state. As adults they enjoyed the fact their parents lived on the same neighborhood block. As Joy tells it, her son Brent thought all grandparents lived next door to each other until he was 11!

Joe and Joy's parents still live in Jamestown, so they will be returning home to enjoy their parents as adults. They have often thought about moving home “someday” and this position as Library Director just appeared and kept calling to them.

Joy's Parting Words
Joe and I will miss this place we have called home for so long.  Personally, I would not have been prepared for this position without the leadership of Dr. Cherry.  Wow, is she a fantastic example and mentor!  Everyone in NC is hoping I learned many valuable lessons from her!  Thank you especially to Dr. Cherry and everyone at RBC for this wonderful successful life!
