First through fifth graders learn together in an unfinished building with a leaky roof, no electricity or running water. Kindergartners learn in a dirt-floor shanty with no windows. Without blackboards, lessons are sometimes written on cut-open flour sacks. Books are old and tattered. International Unity has adopted this school, and wants to send teaching supplies. By supplying the teachers with materials, entire classes can benefit from learning. Also, the more equipped the school, the more the Masai elders of the village tend to send their children to school, breaking the cycle of poverty. (Source: Handout from International Unity Club) On November 7, 2001, The International Unity Club held an informational get together in the Richard Bland College Library. Professors Delano and Jefferson spoke about the need for supplies and educational opportunities for young people in Kenya. Professor Jefferson brought many interesting items - including a beaded bridal necklace, an elder's chair and pictures of the Sekenani Primary School in Kenya. Ms. Jefferson's family hosted a young Kenyan girl while she attended college here at Richard Bland and some of the items that Ms. Jefferson shared with us were treasured gifts from the student's family. Many faculty and students attended this program. The International Unity Club is collecting funds to purchase school supplies; or individuals can donate school supplies directly to the club. We're glad to share these pictures with you.
