Filming of an IRS Commercial @ your library®

On Thursday, July 10, the newly renovated Richard Bland College Library served as the setting for an IRS commercial designed to promote part-time employment opportunities with the Internal Revenue Service.  When architect and location scout Isaac Regelson approached Dr. James McNeer about using the RBC Library as a backdrop for a commercial, the president of RBC agreed to have the Richmond-based Park Group production company film on campus.

McNeer adds, “The filming of a commercial in our newly renovated library has enabled us to show the public what a great venue we have for not only academic support services but community use as well. As the center of learning on campus, the Richard Bland College Library is the place to be for intellectual stimulation and personal growth.”

Park Group was looking for a vibrant college setting, and Library Director Dr. Virginia Cherry was delighted that the film crew appreciated the library as a modern, yet warm and inviting, locale. Scheduling a film shoot during the summer did not interfere with academics as only a small number of classes are currently in session.

Rather than film the commercial in the library’s sizeable computer lab on the first floor, the film crew decided to take advantage of the second floor which offers large windows and an expansive view of Ernst Hall and the college’s lush, tree-lined campus.  Professor Roger Franklin, who heads Academic Computing at RBC, and his assistant John Dyson helped convert a tranquil reading area into a high-tech environment by relocating library computers to the upstairs.

Approximately twenty-five cast and crew members from the Park Group arrived at 9 am to transform the upstairs of the library into a sound stage complete with lighting, cameras, props and wardrobe.  Shooting at RBC took less than a day.

The IRS commercial, entitled “Portrait in America,” features other locales as well.  Directors Chuck Renaud and Anthony Gasparro are also filming at a private Richmond residence and at the Fairfield Commons Mall.  In addition to featuring a college student in an academic setting, the commercial also highlights a retired couple, a young mother, and an intern, all of whom are considered good candidates for temporary and seasonal jobs available with the IRS.  The commercial will be broadcast in five major cities, but not in Virginia.
