Petersburg Garden Club Lily Show @ your library®


On June 16 and 17, The Garden Club of Virginia presented The 68th Annual Lily Show 2010 sponsored by The Petersburg Garden Club and assisted by The North American Lily Society. The Lily Show was held at the Union Train Station in Petersburg, and the theme was "All Aboard!".

Library Director Dr. Virginia Cherry, a new member of the Petersburg Garden Club, attended the special event in June.

SPECIAL CONNECTION TO RICHARD BLAND COLLEGE

Until construction of the Lee Park Nature Center is complete, the Richard Bland College Library is storing the Petersburg Garden Club's herbarium collection along with botanical watercolors by Virginia artist Bessie Niemeyer Marshall.

The book With Paintbrush and Shovel: Preserving Virginia's Wildflowers includes reprints of Marshall's botanical watercolors.

Bessie Niemeyer Marshall's artwork depicts a WPA project that put women to work in Petersburg, Virginia, creating a wildflower sanctuary during the 1930s.
