ResearchThe Richard Bland College Friends of the Library are pleased to announce the first Student Research Paper Awards competition to be held during the current Spring 2013 semester. The intent of the Student Research Paper Awards is to recognize and encourage excellence in research and writing.

Papers will be judged primarily by the quality of Library and Internet sources cited (including journal articles, books, or web resources), as well as the overall quality of writing and presentation. Papers may be about any topic and may be of any length, so long as reliable information sources are cited. Longer papers will NOT be assumed better papers.

Top prize will be a $200 award to the student writing the paper with a $50 honorarium to the RBC professor who assigned and graded the paper. Second prize will be a $100 award to the student and a $50 honorarium to the assigning/grading professor.

Papers will be judged by Richard Bland College's three librarians: Jacqueline Carrell, Irene Handy, and Dan Ream, and must meet the following criteria:

  • Paper must be originally written and turned in for RBC credit during the Spring 2013 semester.
  • All sources must be cited using a standard citation format (MLA, APA, or Chicago/Turabian).
  • Librarians and library staff MAY be consulted for research advice and assistance.
  • Web resources cited must be of high quality (CRAAP Test criteria may be helpful in determining this).
  • The RBC Library will be permitted to publish the winning papers on its website.

Papers must be turned in at the RBC Library service desk no later than 5:00PM on Friday, April 26 and should include a cover sheet with the student’s and professor’s name. These will be removed before judging begins. Awards will be announced on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

Questions may be addressed to Dan Ream, RBC Library Director, at dream@rbc.edu.
