Twin Towers: The Life of New York City's World Trade Center

Richard Bland College

In 1999, Richard Bland College Professor Mary Monroe presented the book Twin Towers: The Life of New York City's World Trade Center to the Richard Bland College Library.  Mary is a graduate of Sweet Briar College and received her master's degree from The College of William and Mary.  Mary returned to teach at Richard Bland College part-time from 1972 until 1974 and then joined the faculty full-time as Associate Professor of Biology in 1974.

Mary's brother, Angus Kress Gillespie, is an associate professor of American Studies at Rutgers University, and is the author of Twin Towers, published in 1999 by Rutgers University Press. In February 2000, he reviewed his book at the Windows on the World restaurant for the business leaders at the World Trade Center.

In his book, Professor Gillespie portrays the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center as symbols of America rather than just office buildings. The Twin Towers were completed in 1976 and remained the tallest man-made structures in New York City until……………September 11, 2001.

The Richard Bland College Library has on display a poster-size article about Twin Towers. The poster depicts a day in the life of the Twin Towers. Gillespie himself "spent 24 hours in the building that, like the city itself, never sleeps." (At 5:00 A.M. the 254 elevators are inspected as they are readied for carrying 450,000 passengers every day and thus begins another day at the Twin Towers.) Source: Rutgers Magazine. "Twin Towers." Spring 2000: 24-25.

Since the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Professor Gillespie has been interviewed by numerous sources including an interview appearing in the Washington Post.  For access, retrieve online at http://www.washingtonpost.com and then search by his name.
