At a research facility in the Rocky Mountains hundreds of idealists (both conservative and liberal) volunteer their time researching backgrounds and records of over 12,000 candidates for public office. The results of this research on voting records, campaign finances, position statements and more are available both on their website and in print. Project Vote-Smart was founded in 1992 by 40 national leaders including former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. It is dedicated to providing unbiased and accurate information on those who would hold political office. It is nonpartisan, non-profit, independent, objective, reputable, mission-oriented and thorough. "Project Vote-Smart provides a comprehensive database about more than 40,000 candidates and elected officials for U.S. President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governors and State Legislators. Profiles of these individuals include: contact and biographical information, key votes, issue positions, campaign contributions, interest group ratings from over 100 liberal to conservative groups."
