Biography
Curtis L. Andrews (1929-2011) was a library regular who never to visited the library empty-handed. He often delivered bouquets of roses and carnations to the library. And at Christmastime, he would treat the staff to chocolates.
Born and raised in Petersburg, Mr. Andrews was a prolific reader who enjoyed histories, especially those focusing on World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and retired from Honeywell with forty years of experience. He was also an avid golfer, fisherman, and loved to travel.
Mr. Andrews has two daughters and four grandchildren. One grandson, Terry L. Hahn, Jr., is a graduate of RBC. When Hahn graduated in 2002, Andrews donated funds to the library’s Graduate Books program so that the book, The Petersburg Campaign: The Battle of the Crater, "The Horrid Pit", June 25-August 6, 1864, could be added to the library collection in his grandson’s name.
Library staff were always touched by Mr. Andrews’ generosity and thoughtfulness. Andrews claimed, “The staff are all very nice to me. I like to make them happy. Plus, flowers brighten up the place.”
An article about Mr. Andrews and his flowers appeared in the September 2007 issue of the VLA (Virginia Libraries Association) Newsletter.
