Art Internet Sites
Yahoo "Pick of the Year" and a Mining Company "Best of the Net" selection this site is a treat for the photographic eye. Site contains works from 1939 to WWI. This site offers outstanding examples of photography in an artistic layout , fulfilling its claim as a "A Museum with out Walls.for an Art without Boundaries." 
The Archives, which was founded in 1954, has been part of the Smithsonian Institution since 1970 and is the largest source in the world of primary source documentation about American visual arts from the 18th century to the 1950s and beyond. It includes catalogues and papers of artists, dealers, critics, art historians, curators, administrators, museums and related organizations. 
This site is divided into 9 categories: search engines, newsgroups, mailing lists, library catalogues and bookstores, article indexes, universities (Art History departments on the web), Collections, other resources, and citing sources. This site has many useful links, including a link to a virtual tour of museums around the world.
This is a very easy to use art dictionary. It includes definitions of over 3,300 terms and includes some illustrations, links to related Web sites, and cross references. 
This site provides a virtual introduction to the largest art museum in the US. The user can view 3,500 pieces of art in the online art collection. Current art exhibits may be viewed and one can shop online at the museum shop. A feature called "My Met Gallery," allows the user to design his/her own personal gallery by building a set of links to favorite entries from the works available to view. 
This site provides information and views of current exhibits, a selection of works from the museums many collections, educational resources, information about the museum and online shopping from the museum store. 
The National Gallery has one of the finest collections in the world illustrating major achievements in painting, sculpture and graphic arts from the Middle Ages to the Present. The collection of over 100,000 objects can be searched by artist, subject, provenance and accession number. It is also possible to do selected tours by subject area. 
Over 4000 viewable objects can be searched by artist or subject area. There is also a Search Inventory feature. The calendar includes traveling exhibits. The reference desk feature called "Ask Joan of Art," allows the user to view frequently asked questions and to also ask specific questions. There is also a link to the periodical American Art.
