President's Comments

Dr. James B. McNeer, PresidentNearly four years ago the Richard Bland College Foundation embarked on its first Capital Campaign. With significant assistance from the Cameron Foundation's capacity-building grant, numerous other foundation awards, personal commitments from numerous college faculty, staff and individual supporters, businesses, RBC Foundation Board members, and the Board of Visitors of The College of William and Mary, I am pleased to report that we have reached our $5,000,000 goal!!

With the initial grant from the Cameron Foundation, the College enlisted the services of The Sheridan Group from Arlington, Virginia to support the capacity-building activities, including technical assistance which allowed the staff to track donors, conduct follow-ups, and keep accurate donor records.

The goal of the campaign was three-fold: to assist RBC in building support facilities for the residential village, to increase the number of endowed scholarships, and to assist in the funding of other campus-wide enhancements, including new recreation facilities.

The conclusion of this particular campaign does not in any way signal the end of our need to raise private funding for the College. We will continue to need support for the annual fund which is used to operate the Advancement Office, as well as fund the endowment, which awards over fifty (50) local scholarships per year and provides the funding for over sixty (60) $1000 President Merit Scholarships each year.

Plans are already underway for the development of a new recreational complex between Statesman Hall and the Residential Village. The complex will consist of three tennis courts, a softball field, and outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. We hope to maximize the use of the facility through the installation of a modern outdoor lighting system. Additional private funds are needed since the estimated cost for the entire project approaches $1,000,000.00.

It is indeed a great accomplishment to have achieved our most immediate goal, but much work still needs to be done, and I thank all our donors for your past support and look forward to your continued commitment in the months and years ahead.
