Richard Bland College (RBC) track and field delivered outstanding performances over the weekend as four Statesmen earned All-American honors at the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Topeka, Kansas.
Leading the way was Michaelyn Fisher, who was named national champion in the long jump with a winning mark of 5.98 meters. She is the first-ever Statesmen to be named national champion in any event at the championships. On the men’s side, Brian Harris earned national runner-up honors in the long jump, posting an impressive mark of 7.44 meters.
RBC also saw two additional athletes reach the podium with fourth-place finishes. Camrie Boothes notched a mark of 5.76 meters in the long jump, while Lavor Johnson leaped for 15.34 meters in the triple jump.
All four athletes—Fisher, Harris, Boothes and Johnson—earned NJCAA All-American honors for their top finishes at the meet. The quartet’s performances capped a successful indoor season for the Statesmen and showcased the College’s continued presence among the nation’s top junior college track and field programs.
“Our athletes displayed incredible heart on the national stage, consistently upholding the standard and mindset established from day one—winners win,” said Rashad Cannon, RBC track & field and cross-country coach. “Our kids set clear goals, and as coaches, our role is to hold them accountable.
“This weekend, we not only met those goals but achieved even more. When hard work and thorough preparation are put in, the results are undeniable, as demonstrated this weekend. This is only the beginning—we are far from done.”
The Statesmen also saw record-breaking performances on the track. Corey Winfield Jr. broke the College’s record in the 400 meters with a 47.68 finish. Additionally, the men’s 4×400 meter relay team (Nathaniel Simmons, Braylen Minor, Winfield Jr. and Braylon Slappy) posted a new school record in the event with a 3:15.16 finish.
The program continues to impress since its revival just four years ago. To date, several athletes have gone on to compete at the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) Division I level.
