David See: Purpose Beyond the Uniform

After years of military service, this RBC student brings newfound motivation to his higher education journey.

The journey to higher education for David See, a first-year student at Richard Bland College (RBC), is shaped by discipline and a renewed sense of purpose.

When See graduated from high school, college was not a part of his immediate plan. Instead, he decided to enlist in the Army. He spent several years stationed in Texas and served a year-long stint in Germany. As a cavalry scout, his role involved surveying battlefields and conducting reconnaissance to provide critical intelligence for infantry and armored units.

“My time in the military was fun in many ways,” he said. “But my job was very stressful.”

In 2022, he decided to leave active duty and pursue higher education. Despite taking an eight-year break between high school and college, he says the biggest difference now is his mindset.

“I have a better motivation and desire to learn,” he said. “The Army taught me discipline and values that I know will help me succeed.”

He initially decided on RBC because of proximity. But he was unaware of the wealth of opportunity and support in store.

“Richard Bland is a great school,” he said. “The teachers here are top notch and want the best for their students.”

See found instant success—he finished his first semester with an impressive 3.8 GPA.

Outside of the classroom, fitness plays a major role in See’s life. He trains regularly in powerlifting and weightlifting, as well as judo and jiu-jitsu. He’s also considering starting a martial arts club at the College.

Looking ahead, See plans to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue a career in sports medicine.

“I feel I have a lot to offer in the athletic world,” he said. “I want to educate people on how to take care of their bodies.”

Additionally, the first-year student serves part time in the Army Reserve, where he works as an instructor for ROTC cadets during the summer.

With the discipline he gained through military service and a clear vision for the future, See is living proof it is never too late to begin your higher education journey.
