Dr. Bjorkman researches undergraduate mathematics education. She seeks to understand the many physical, social, cultural, and cognitive influences at play when a student is learning mathematics in an undergraduate setting. Her background, including degrees in pure mathematics (BS, MS), cognitive psychology (BS), and mathematics and science education (PhD), allows her to consider her work of teaching and research from a diversity of theoretical and practical perspectives.
She organizes a regional conference on research in undergraduate mathematics education annually (https://sites.google.com/vcu.edu/ma-rume) as well as a working group focused on research in the context of two-year schools at SIGMAA on RUME (http://sigmaa.maa.org/rume/Site/News.html).
Her current work seeks to understand the factors that result in mathematics being classified as college level or not college level and the implications for transfer and equity, as well as the experiences of neurodiverse students in mathematics courses.
