Scott Newton, Richard Bland College Director of Athletics, is proud to announce the addition of Women’s Flag Football as RBC’s newest intercollegiate sport. The program will officially launch in spring 2027, marking another exciting step in the College’s expanding commitment to athletic opportunity and equity.

The NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) formally sanctioned Women’s Flag Football as a championship sport earlier this year, paving the way for two-year institutions nationwide to compete at the highest level. Richard Bland College joins a select and growing group of NJCAA and NCAA programs offering the fast-paced, 7-on-7 format, which continues to gain momentum across collegiate and professional landscapes.

Women’s collegiate flag football showcases seven players on a football field that is 40 yards in width by 80 yards in length. Each team moves offensively by running or passing a football, while the defense tries to “tackle” by pulling flags on the belt of the ball carrier.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our female student-athletes,” Newton said. “Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and we’re thrilled that Richard Bland College will be among the early adopters helping grow the game at the NJCAA level.”

The RBC Women’s Flag Football team will compete as a 7-on-7 program, following NJCAA guidelines and regional play structures. Recruitment for the inaugural roster will begin soon, with the team slated to host its first official games in spring 2027.

Richard Bland College Athletics currently sponsors 15 NJCAA programs. The launch of Women’s Flag Football continues the College’s momentum as one of the premier and most innovative NJCAA athletic programs in the region.

A national search for the program’s first coach will launch immediately. If you are interested in or have any questions about the position, please email Scott Newton.
