RICHARD BLAND COLLEGE STUDENT ATHLETES TO RECEIVE ATHLETIC TRAINING FROM SOUTHSIDE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
Petersburg, VA – Richard Bland College and Southside Regional Medical Center (SRMC) have formally entered into a collaborative agreement to provide a comprehensive sports medicine program to optimize the activity and participation of Richard Bland’s student athletes. This follows the College’s April announcement that it would rejoin the NJCAA to offer basketball, track and field, cross country, soccer and softball.
Student athletes will receive treatment from certified athletic trainers as part of this partnership between Richard Bland College and SRMC. The trainer’s responsibilities will be to evaluate the individual being treated and to plan, administer and document their progress. SRMC will also provide education and instruction to Richard Bland coaches and other personnel regarding injury treatment and prevention.
“Preventing and treating injuries is a critical part of college athletics. Having a partnership with a reputable hospital like SRMC gives the athletic staff a high level of confidence that our student athletes have access to experts in athletic training and quality treatment when they need it,” said Richard Bland College Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chuck Moore.
SRMC Assistant CEO Joseph Wilkins, DPT, MSHA said, “Southside Regional Medical Center is excited to be the exclusive provider of athletic training and sports medicine services for Richard Bland College. Our health care professionals at SRMC will ensure that Richard Bland student athletes are rendered quality and customer focused care that allows them to be active, healthy and competitive on the fields, courts, and in the classroom.”
The sports medicine program between Richard Bland and SRMC will begin August 1, 2013, and will automatically renew for successive one-year terms.
